This chapter discusses what the future holds for performance measurement and whether cross‐organisational measurement systems or the adoption of “Big Data” analytics has the potential to cure any of the madness described in the book. All organisations, however small, are complex organisms made up of complex human beings with their own individual habits, preferences, skills, knowledge, emotions and aspirations. Measuring and managing performance is a profoundly social activity, which is tightly linked to the behaviours of individuals and groups. Performance measurement is constantly developing and advances in technology, business models and networks are being made. The biggest changes seen in recent years are the use of performance measurement across organisational boundaries and the increasing use of business analytics under the umbrella of “Big Data.” Well‐designed and implemented performance measurement systems can be of great assistance and performance measures can help establish an organisation's position, enhance clarity around goals, processes and roles and align behaviours with the organisation's strategy.
