Angesichts der steigenden globalen Nachfrage nach tierischem Eiweiß haben Strategien zur Abmilderung des Klimawandels sowohl für politische Entscheidungsträger als auch für die Milch‐ und Viehwirtschaft hohe Priorität. Dieser Beitrag untersucht die Rolle, die Technik und Innovation in der Tiererzeugung spielen, als Strategie zur Abmilderung des Klimawandels sowie zur Ernährung einer wachsenden und gesünderen Weltbevölkerung. Wir betrachten die Zielsetzung, mehr Lebensmittel bei geringerem Ressourceneinsatz zu produzieren, um die Umweltauswirkungen der Milch‐ und Viehwirtschaft zu minimieren. Das Maß an Umweltverträglichkeit kann durch ein leistungsfähiges Agrarsystem, das natürliche Ressourcen effizient nutzt, aufrechterhalten und erhöht werden. Aber um von dem sozialen und ökologischen Nutzen einer effizienten und nachhaltigen Agrar‐ und Ernährungswirtschaft profitieren zu können, ist es wichtig, politische und von den Medien ausgelöste Hemmnisse abzubauen, die oftmals in Form von falschen Informationen und Angaben daherkommen. Sichere und zugelassene Innovationen aus den Bereichen Produkte, Verfahren und Genetik stehen den Landwirten derzeit zur Verfügung, um tierische Erzeugnisse nachhaltiger herzustellen. Die größte Herausforderung für die Politik besteht darin, diese Innovation auf den Weg zu bringen, um neue Optionen bei der Anpassung der Agrartechnik zu eröffnen. Hierzu werden sich der öffentliche und der private Sektor mit den irreführenden Vorurteilen, die in den Medien über die Agrar‐ und Lebensmitteltechnik vorherrschen, korrigierend auseinandersetzen müssen.
