Michael Eugene Doyle, Ana Marina Ferreira and colleagues review the current understanding of bone tissue mineralisation and structure, providing a critical outlook on the existing biomimetic strategies of mineralising collagen for bone tissue engineering applications. Featured on the cover is a scanning electron microscopy image of in vitro biomineralised collagen with biomimetic matrix density. The biomimetic collagenous matrix was mineralised (in absence of cells) through the liquid coprecipitation of apatite and collagen, and subsequently densified through plastic compression. The fabricated woven fibrillar matrix boasts extensive extra‐fibrillar mineralisation and clusters of carbonated hydroxyapatite crystals dispersed throughout. DOI: 10.1002/bip.23527
