IT, understood as a set of information and communication technologies, is not only driving the digitization of work. In fact, geographically distributed teams, as they arise for example through mergers or acquisitions, are in the first place by IT put in a position to cooperate: IT is the “enabler” of a global, digitized work—especially in software development. Agile methods such as Scrum or Kanban, in general, foster effective and efficient team collaboration. However, geographically distributed teams are faced with very specific challenges. This article provides an overview of the subject and, based on a concrete case study from the software industry, ultimately shows how these challenges can be overcome by using IT.
