The medical support for people with mental retardation and/or multiple disabilities presents considerable challenges for the current medical healthcare system. Despite the principal requirement of inclusion of people with disabilities in all parts of our social cohabitation, specialized and economically adequately equipped institutions are necessary. According to the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, this should not be restricted to the opening of the current care landscape for people with mental or multiple disabilities. The special needs of people who are mostly limited in their communication have to be considered.
