Diabetes Typ 2 ist eine chronische Erkrankung mit zunehmender sozioökonomischer Bedeutung. Die Gesundheitsversorgung von Patienten mit Typ-2-Diabetes und daraus resultierenden Komplikationen steht oftmals nicht in Übereinstimmung mit aktuellen Leitlinienempfehlungen. Register können einerseits dazu dienen, epidemiologische Daten zu sammeln, andererseits aber auch dazu beitragen, das Screening, die Diagnosestellung und die Behandlung zu verbessern. Die Versorgung von Diabetespatienten kann durch Register sowohl auf einer individuellen als auch auf einer gesellschaftlichen Ebene verbessert werden. Aus der Perspektive der gesetzlichen Krankenversicherung ist es von großer Bedeutung, dass zur Evaluation der epidemiologischen und gesundheitsökonomischen Situation valide Daten erhoben werden. Um eine Evaluation basierend auf Registerdaten durchzuführen, stehen unterschiedliche Studiendesigns wie Kohortenstudien, Fall-Kontroll-Studien oder Befragungen zur Verfügung. Die methodische Durchführung einer Registerstudie im Bereich Diabetes hängt daher ab vom jeweils präferierten Studientyp, darüber hinaus aber auch von finanziellen, strukturellen und personellen Aspekten.
