Sozialwissenschaftliche Forschung zu militärischer Multinationalität findet erst seit Anfang der 1990er Jahre statt, denn bis dahin wurde dieses militärpolitische Phänomen wenn überhaupt nur unter sicherheitspolitischer Perspektive betrachtet. Das Sozialwissenschaftliche Institut der Bundeswehr (SOWI) hat in Zusammenarbeit mit seinen europäischen Partnerinstituten in Frankreich und den Niederlanden die militärsoziologische Forschung auf diesem Feld begründet und maßgebliche Schritte zur Erkundung tief integrierter militärischer Multinationalität geleistet. Diese Tradition wurde am SOWI im Rahmen der Untersuchung des Multinationalen Korps Nordost in Zusammenarbeit mit Forschern aus den beiden dänischen und polnischen Partnerinstituten fortgeführt und weiterentwickelt. Der Begriff ‚Multinationalität‘ wird aber oftmals auch für die bloße internationale Kooperation von Streitkräften verwendet, wie sie in den Stäben von Militärbündnissen oder in Auslandseinsätzen des Militärs praktiziert wird, die aber eine andere Qualität besitzt als die feste und tiefe Integration von militärischen Einheiten verschiedener Länder im Rahmen der integrierten militärischen Multinationalität. Daher ist es notwendig, die weniger anspruchsvollen Ansätze zum Zweck der Abgrenzung im Folgenden kurz darzustellen, bevor auf die integrierte militärische Multinationalität näher eingegangen wird.
