Im Anschluss an die Beobachtung, dass sich ›sozialräumliche Orientierungen‹, vor allem im Verlauf der späten 1990er-Jahre auf nahezu allen sozialpolitischen Aktionsebenen Sozialer Arbeit zu dominierenden Strategien entwickeln, gehen wir in zwei Schritten vor: 1.
Zunächst wenden wir uns kursorisch der neuen sozialwissenschaftlichen Theoretisierung des Raumbegriffs zu, um auf dieser Basis zu erörtern, ob und inwiefern der sozialpädagogische Sozialraumdiskurs als eine Applikation dieser Theorieansätze verstanden werden kann oder in andere Entwicklungslinien einzuordnen ist.

In einem zweiten Schritt wird die ›sozialräumliche Orientierung‹ im Kontext der Krise jenes gesellschaftspolitischen Raums diskutiert, der als ›das Soziale‹ bezeichnet werden kann. Die ›Sozialraumorientierung‹ in der Sozialen Arbeit lässt sich mit ›neo-sozialen‹ Regulationsrationalitäten in Beziehung setzen, die die Grundlinien einer Refiguration des ›alten‹ Versuchs einer Lösung des permanenten ›Integrationsproblems‹ moderner Gesellschaften reflektieren.
