In its first benchmarking project, the professional association for the building and construction industry evaluated the outcomes of calcaneus fractures. A list of measurable benchmarking indicators was drawn up to support regular evaluation of the organizational case management process. The retrospective analysis of anonymous data based on occupational accidents with unilateral, isolated calcaneus fractures occurred between 2003 and 2005. The relevant data were compiled and standardized to the rehabilitation steps. Epidemiological methods were used for analysis. The benchmark indicator“return to work” revealed a rate of 78%. At the time of first assessment for a pension, the relevant benchmark indicator“incapacity for work” was reduced about 20% for over 66% of the accidents. In the long-term trend, the comparison between the average periods of unfitness for work and the average costs of rehabilitation showed a drop of 13%. A short period of unfitness for work was supported by early suitable care with orthopedic aids. Organizational case management has proved to be effective for reintegrating accident victims. A follow-up study will be conducted.
