Three noteworthy calciphilous lichen species Placynthium dolichoterum (Nyl.) Trevis., Schadonia fecunda (Th. Fr.) Vězda & Poelt and Solorina octospora (Arnold) Arnold have been reported for the first time from Poland from the mylonite area of the High Tatra Mts. The genus Schadonia is new to Poland. Brief morphological description of the species based on Polish specimens is provided. Ecology and...
We examined the taxonomic status and distribution of Poa populations from supramontane and subalpine belt of the central Western Carpathians, so far classified as P. nemoralis subsp. carpatica and P. nemoralis subsp. montana. Significant morphological differences from P. nemoralis s. str. as well as combination of shared vs distinct characters allow us to attribute the populations under study to the...
The paper brings information on an isolated occurrence and morphological characters of Carex × involuta and C. juncella populations in the Vel’ká Fatra Mts. Their presence has been known neither from the territory of Slovakia nor from the whole Western Carpathians till now.
A list of species and the distribution of the members of Plasmopara (Chromista, Peronosporales) on Geranium spp. in the Tatra National Park (Western Carpathians) biospheric reserve are given. Three fungal species parasitizing 3 plant species were recorded in the area. Plasmopara praetermissa is a species new to Poland and Slovakia.
The first locality of Carex vaginata Tausch from the Western Carpathians is reported. This glacial relic was found at a refugial site in the Mt. Kubínska hoľa (the Oravská Magura Mts, Slovakia), in the saddle peat bog at 1,312 m a.s.l.
Simulium degrangei Dorier & Grenier, 1960 was recorded in southern and central Europe and in the Crimea and Caucasus. Its distribution pattern is scattered. The variability of the mtDNA gene encoding cytochrome oxidase I was studied in populations of S. degrangei from the Western Carpathians in Slovakia and in the northern Hellenides of Greece. In the analyzed samples, 21 haplotypes were recorded,...
We characterize lichen flora of Slovakia based on the review of recent studies published since 1998, point at selected lichen taxa described for science from this territory and outline main geographical elements and other important groups. We annex critically revised and updated checklist of lichens of Slovakia, which includes 1,628 species. As a result of intensive field work the number of species...
The Holarctic butterflies of the genus Erebia (Lepidoptera) in the Western Carpathians is represented by around 10 mainly mountain species. In this study, phylogenetic relationships among Erebia euryale, E. medusa, E. manto, E. epiphron, E. pharte, E. gorge, E. aethiops, E. pronoe, E. pandrose, and E. ligea from different Western Carpathians localities were compared with other Erebia species on the...
A total of 333 specimens of Erebia medusa from four sites with different altitudes in the Western Carpathians, specifically from orographical units of the Košická kotlina basin (Beniakovce), the Busov Mts (Cigeľka), the Pieniny Mts (Targov) and the Muránska planina Mts (Studna), were collected and subsequently analyzed for specific morphological structures of valvae using morphometric techniques to...
Alpine dock (Rumex alpinus) is a native plant species in many European mountain ranges. It comes from moist brushwood and open tall herb communities, though it has invaded mountain pastures. This troublesome weed forms permanent monodominant stands characterised by low nature conservation and agricultural values. However, to the best of our knowledge, there are no studies assessing the impact of R. alpinus...
