Orthopteroid assemblages (orders Orthoptera and Mantodea) were compared along moisture gradient at five sites of the Slovak Karst in southern Slovakia. A total of 40 species were recorded by sweep-net sampling. The occurence of each identified species varied with soil moisture and other factors. Sites with similar moisture conditions tend to have similar assemblages. No species occurred simultaneously...
In two successive years we recorded a total of 3,636 individuals and 17 species of adult lady beetles (Coleoptera, Coccinellidae) in the spruce forests of Pol’ana Mts (the West Carpathians) at altitudes ranging from 600 m to 1,300 m a.s.l. Four lady beetle species were documented as predominating (dominance of abundance > 5%) over the study period. They were the following: Aphidecta obliterata...
Coenosia bohemica sp. n. is described from the Bohemian Forest in the Czech Republic. Its relationships to similar species are discussed and its diagnostic characters are illustrated.
Shinnersia rivularis is reported as a new alien species of the Slovak flora. The species was found in the catchment water of a thermal spring at a site in Partizánske, part Veľké Bielice (West Slovakia) in 2002. In the year of discovery, plants formed single population of about 30 square metres of water surface of the canal discharging warm water from the spa. Two populations covering the area ca...
This paper presents a part of the results obtained from extensive studies conducted on springs — remarkable freshwater habitats with many unique characteristics and a high degree of biological diversity. The abiotic conditions and fauna composition of 68 submontane permanent oligotrophic springs in the Blanice River catchment (eastern part of The Bohemian Forest, Czech Republic) were investigated...
The hypothesis of associating pseudoscorpions with bird nest types was tested on the basis of an analysis of 480 specimens. Eleven pseudoscorpion species were found in 171 nests of 28 different bird species collected in Slovakia, Austria and the Czech Republic. The frequent appearance of Cheiridium museorum, Dactylochelifer latreillii, Chernes hahnii, Dendrochernes cyrneus and Allochernes wideri was...
Macroinvertebrate communities were investigated along a gradient of heavy industrial and municipal pollution in the highland Bílina River (Czech Republic). Physico-chemical determinants and ions were monitored and community analysis performed focusing on taxonomic composition, ecological functioning (feeder and dweller guilds) and water quality metrics, including saprobity index, BMWP and diversity...
Bunias orientalis is an alien species that has spread greatly in recent decades in Central Europe. This coloniser is particularly well (pre)adapted to anthropogenic disturbances and human-mediated dispersal, allowing it to spread mainly along roads and railways. Here, its distribution and population structure is investigated for the sub-montane region located in the northern foothills of...
We estimated the seasonal dynamics and life cycle of the chironomid Heterotrissocladius marcidus (Walker, 1856) in three alpine lakes in the High Tatra Mountains (Central Europe). H. marcidus had univoltine cycle in all lakes surveyed and seasonal changes of density showed an early summer and an autumn peak interrupted by a mid-summer decline of larval abundance. Our results indicate that phenology...
Rhynchotalona falcata (G.O. Sars, 1861) was found in the plankton of a gravel pit located in the lowlands of Slovakia. This is the first record of this taxon for Slovakia, although it is widely distributed in Western Europe. We do not know to date, whether it is a rare, native species of Slovakian fauna, or accidentally introduced one from north-west regions of Europe. Some notes on its biology and...
We review the known information on the distribution and habitat affinities of the Micrargus herbigradus-species group in Poland. The analysis is based on a thorough literature survey, our own materials, and verification of some older collections. We give new diagnostic drawings and review the characters that are useful in identification of species within the group. Three species are present in Poland:...
Quercus dalechampii Ten. is an oak species recognised by numerous authors, but it has an inconsistent taxonomical use depending on any particular author’s concept. Typification of Q. dalechampii in 2012 made this name inapplicable for Central European populations traditionally treated as Q. dalechampii. A new name, Q. banatus, based on Quercus aurea Wierzb. ex Kotschy, is here designated for a taxon...
Organic substrates are distinctive and important resources due to their ability to regulate nutrient cycles and habitats they provide. In this research we test the importance of organic substrates for present distribution of habitats accumulating organic sediment and compare historic (circa 1850) and present land cover maps to characterise the long-term change on these substrates. The results show:...
