We present a real-time single-channel 100-Gbit/s QPSK transmission using a photonics-based 300-GHz-band wireless link, which is the highest data rate ever reported by an analog coherent receiver without digital signal processing (DSP). For this, a new technique to stabilize a phase of 300-GHz-band carrier signal is proposed and successfully demonstrated.
We present a future-proof network architecture for ultra-high capacity indoor wireless communication consisting of a hierarchical wavelength-based dynamic routing for downstream optical-wireless communication and 60-GHz radio-over-fiber (RoF) system with wavelength reuse in the upstream direction. Bidirectional transmission of 25 Gb/s is demonstrated using discrete-multi-tone modulation.
DWDM-RoF transport and photonic generation of millimeter-wave MIMO signals has been demonstrated. Generation and modulation of independent data streams over different wavelengths provides allocation flexibility and centralization. EVM results show that this low-cost technique provides antenna diversity/multiplexing gain for STBC-Alamouti and Zero-Forcing algorithms based OFDM-MIMO.
We demonstrate an on-chip 60 GHz phased array antenna feeder with record-low footprint (active area <2.5μm2), based on ultra-compact plasmonic modulators. The chip footprint is only limited by the contact pads size. Our implementation also enables ultra-fast steering with less than 1 ns reconfiguration time.
Optically-connected distributed-type millimeter-wave radar system is one of the key solutions to develop a wide coverage, a high detection performance and a high-resolution radar with a low cost. We have been developed optically-connected 96 GHz millimeter-wave radar system to detect small foreign object debris on the airport runways. The radar transmission signal is delivered to the antenna by the...
We experimentally demonstrate fiber-nonlinearity-tolerant conjugated-paired radio-on-fiber (C-RoF) system for the first time. A C-RoF signal is simply generated by dual-sideband modulation and fiber nonlinearity is cancelled through asymmetric photonic heterodyne down-conversion. A QPSK-C-RoF signal is transferred over 20-km SMF fiber.
We have been trying to develop photonic devices and sub-systems for radio-over-fiber based wireless mobile communication in dense-user environments. We report demonstrations of millimeter-wave wireless signal generation using optical 2-tone and its detection by use of array-antenna-electrode electrooptic modulators.
We present a conceptual microwave photonics radar architecture with programmable central-frequency and tailorable bandwidth. It is a coherent system. Generation of linearly chirped waveforms and Reception of theirs echoes are implemented via the same mode-locked laser. Photonic time-stretch sampling is used to alleviate electronic processing.
Signals hiding amongst a high level of noise present both basic and practical detection challenges. These challenges become significantly worse when the signal is transient, eliminating standard averaging techniques. The use of optical frequency combs to circumvent these detection challenges is discussed.
We present the field-trial results of a photonics-based radio-frequency scanning receiver demonstrator for electronic support measures (ESM). Typical complex electromagnetic operative scenarios are emulated and correctly acquired, confirming the previously tested laboratory performance of the proposed system, and its promising suitability for actual ESM applications.
We demonstrate a flexible RF photonics down-converter that enables spectral folding of a 2–18 GHz RF band into a common 2 GHz wide IF band. When configured to selective down-conversion mode, we measure a sensitivity of −39.5 dBm and an SFDR of 106 dB Hz2/3.
We present here photonics-based field visualization systems for the millimeter-waves and THz waves. Synchronized coherent measurement system reveals several unique phenomena such as wavefront conversion by a metal hole array. Asynchronized measurement system enables us to visualize the amplitude and relative phase distribution of electromagnetic waves emitted from on-chip antenna devices in which...
This paper presents the impact of signal linewidth on photonic THz wireless systems using phase estimation (PE) algorithms at the receiver. The penalty associated with signal linewidth, as well as the optical linewidth requirements for systems using free-running lasers are evaluated using extensive Monte Carlo simulations for different modulation formats. The BER performance and power penalty induced...
A photonic microwave image-reject and singlesideband mixer is proposed based on a dual-polarization dualdrive Mach-Zehnder modulator. Results show that the image- and sideband-reject ratios of the proposed IRM and SSM are larger than 60 and 30 dB, respectively, and the LO leakage is largely suppressed.
We report on a novel implementation of a photonics-based RF interference mitigation system which is capable of suppressing same-frequency interference from a known signal at least 40 dB stronger than the signal-of-interest. Our technique will be valuable in future simultaneous transmit and receive (STAR) systems.
We present efficient mobile fronthaul systems for simultaneous transmission of radio signals in the microwave and millimeter-wave bands over fiber links. We compare the performance for signal transmission over intermediate frequency over fiber systems using an electrical and optical up-conversion to the MMW band at remote sites. We experimentally confirm the successful transmission of an LTE-A signal...
