We experimentally show that metallic dipole antennas emit ultraviolet radiation when illuminated with ultrashort high-power terahertz pulses due to ultrafast electron field emission from the metal and consecutive ionization and excitation of atmospheric gas molecules.
During last years several new gyrotrons were developed at IAP/GYCOM. The main ITER requirements to a gyrotron have been demonstrated: 170 GHz frequency, 1MW power, 1000 seconds pulse duration, 53% efficiency. For a multi-frequency gyrotron a novel scheme for a tunable window was developed. Additionally some other new gyrotrons were developed for running plasma installations. New directions in the...
When my children asked me why I dedicated more than 25 years on THz wave related research and development, I replied that my choices were limited during the early 80s'. However, when I think back and review the development of broadband THz wave science and technology, I am delighted and very grateful for having had the opportunity, together with many colleagues, students, scientists, engineers, and...
High quality Mn-Co-Ni-O (MCN) spinel films are prepared on Al2O3 substrate by RF magnetron sputtering (RF) and chemical solution deposition (CSD). The microstructural characterizations reveal the films present excellent crystallization and compact surface. The variable temperature electrical results show the films have temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) of −3.8 %/K at 295 K. Based on the...
Fabrication of compact detectors and emitters is essential for development of THz technology. Field-effect transistors (FETs) are promising current- and voltage-driven suitable for this purpose. We report on a THz detection with FETs fabricated on a CdMnTe/CdMgTe quantum well. Both resonant and non-resonant detection in magnetic fields and at low temperatures is demonstrated with a possibility to...
We studied the carrier multiplication efficiency in bulk silicon using optical-pump/THz-probe spectroscopy. By the close analysis of the time resolved data, we observed the enhancement of the quantum efficiency due to carrier multiplication for incident photon energy above 4.1 eV. It agrees well with the results of photo current measurements. We believe that the present results enable us to correlate...
Waveguiding of excitation beam and propagation of THz beam in a complex gradient environment were studied in an array of InP nanowires. Measurements by time-resolved THz spectroscopy accompanied by Monte-Carlo calculations of the response of localized charges enabled determination of transversal electron mobility.
In this study, we demonstrate novel asymmetric metamolecule arrays with multiple sharp resonances. They reveal a new Fano-like mode due to the collective excitation of the metamolecules. Q-factors as high as 38 have been achieved. In the future, such resonances could be used in sensor and filter applications.
An extraordinary transmission effect for terahertz (THz) waves in a complementary metallic disk and hole array was experimentally and numerically demonstrated. Moreover, this result was also theoretically confirmed that the enhanced transmission peak in this structure was contributed both by the SPPs excited on the metallic structures and also the resonance in the dielectric rod between the metallic...
We report on sub-Terahertz photoconductivity of bulk HgxCd1−xTe crystals with composition close to semiconductor-to-semimetal topological transition. Low magnetic field Shubnikov-de Hass like oscillations were observed with a period which does not depend on the incident frequency. Moreover, anomalous B-periodic oscillations were also observed at higher magnetic fields.
