We present passive UHF RFID electro-textile tags integrated into two types of gloves for wearable RFID applications. The performance of the electro-textile glove-tags is evaluated on a male test subject and the results are compared to glove-tags with copper tape antennas. Based on the achieved results, the read ranges of the electro-textile tags are very close to those of the copper tape tags and...
A simple circularly polarized (CP) antenna array is proposed for millimeter-wave applications. The proposed CP antenna array has a two-layer structure, which is easy for fabrication. A circular loop with a parasitic element is used as the radiation element for wideband operation. It is shown that the proposed 4×4 CP antenna array can achieve a gain of 13–16 dBi from 28.5 to 31.5 GHz.
In order to improve the estimation accuracy of radio propagation simulation using a 3D model reconstructed by depth sensors, recovering missing regions of the 3D model is important. In this paper, we report an evaluation result of indoor radio estimation accuracy by using such a completed 3D model. We first describe the evaluation scene and the measurement method of radio powers we used for experiments...
In this paper, a miniaturized wideband dual-polarized antenna loaded with parasitic loops and straight dipoles has been proposed for 2G/3G/4G base-station applications. Firstly, by loading four parasitic loops to the corners of regular crossed loop dipoles, a miniaturized structure and enhanced impedance bandwidth can be obtained. Then, based on the miniaturized structure, two straight dipoles are...
This paper presents the design of a 1×10 series feeding rectangular microstrip patch array antenna for 77 GHz automotive radar. The proposed antenna is designed based on the transmission line model analysis method. To satisfy the sidelobe level of −20 dB in E-plane, 20 dB Taylor distribution is applied to the proposed antenna. Considering the measurement environment, waveguide to microstrip transition...
This paper presents a compensation of variation effect of antennas for stepped-frequency radar identification systems. The antenna effects due to the variation in the antenna response and the mutual coupling degrade the target response in the identification systems. The equation used to reduce the antenna effect is derived. The simulations are demonstrated to validate the benefit of the compensation...
This paper presents design of a varactor-loaded frequency-tunable ring microstrip antenna with reduced bias circuits. Two varactor diodes are mounted on square ring patch element fed by an L-probe to realize a frequency-tunable microstrip antenna. An L-shaped feeding probe is used to realize impedance matching of the ring microstrip antenna. Resonant frequency of the proposed antenna can be tuned...
A fast 3-D ray tracing method based on image theory is presented. The proposed method defines reflection tubes and organizes them in a tree structure to treat images efficiently in a complex 3-D environment. The method can account for all possible rays undergoing multiple reflections and transmissions, and its predictions agree well with the measurements.
To determine E-field at a tip of probe for evaluating SAR (specific absorption rate) values of DUTs in saline solution, use of near-field transmit antenna factor (NF-TAF) of small dipole antenna is proposed. NF-TAF can be expressed in closed form by assuming hyperbolic sinusoidal current distribution. Also, it can be evaluated by measuring S parameters between two identical dipole antennas and dielectric...
The important factors increased the efficiency of the antenna to support users in the current technology are necessary wide impedance bandwidth, high gain, and low back radiation. In this paper, the antenna composed of the curved strip electric dipole and the vertically-oriented short patch is presented. The measured impedance bandwidth of 60.9% (SWR<2) from the frequency range of 1.62–2.9 GHz...
This paper presents a design of the universal reader antenna applied for the radio frequency identification (RFID) system with the operating frequency from 840 MHz to 960 MHz. The antenna structure consists of a rectangular loop and a rectangular feeding patch which are the important elements to produce the circular polarization. The total size of the reader antenna is 120 mm ×120 mm fabricated on...
We have proposed an open terminated folded inverted-L antenna (FILA) with slits. In order to miniaturize the FILA, several slits are employed on the substrate surface. Folded structure is used for broadbanding. Design of the FILA to achieve broadband characteristics is shown. Simulation and measurement are implemented, and comparison of the results are evaluated. Finally, we calculate the product...
This paper presents the results of the antenna pattern measurements conducted on the Ice Cloud Imager 664 GHz feed horn at the ESTEC Sub-mmwave Scanner (SmS) in support to the ICI instrument of the MetOp-SG program. Very good agreement between simulations and measurements was obtained, both in the co- and cross-polar component. The measured peak directivity was 26.28 dBi ± 0.13 dB while the simulated...
This paper present the microstrip patch antenna with I-shaped mushroom like EBG structure for gain enhancement. By properly placing the electromagnetic band gap (EBG) structure around radiating patch, the gain of a conventional microstrip patch antenna is improved. In order to achieve the EBG operation for wireless local area network of U-NII 1 and 2 bands, the EBG structure is formed by using the...
Scattering performance of a reflectarray using a log-periodic dipole array (LPDA) element is demonstrated numerically and experimentally. The LPDA element and the reflectarray are designed using method of moments (MoM). The designed 10 × 1 reflectarray was fabricated using a 3D printing technology. A bistatic radar cross section (BRCS) of the designed reflectarray was measured in a radio anechoic...
In the 5G system, high frequency bands over 6 GHz (6–100 GHz) will be a key factor in providing a very wide bandwidth. Because of high path losses, these bands are considered to use for small cells. To design radio links with high accuracy and evaluate 5G system performances for various scenarios, channel characteristics must be clarified. In this paper, we clarify channel characteristics in an outdoor...
We herein investigate the design of a tapered slot antenna (TSA) that is divided into a radiator and a feeding circuit (balun). We measured the differential component and common component of the surface current on the TSA in a previous study. Moreover, we measured the radiation patterns of the radiator and the balun in order to discuss the radiation of the TSA. In particular, the differential component...
A new multi-polarization reconfigurable omnidirectional antenna is proposed. The antenna consists of a top-loaded monopole for vertically polarized working state (VP), a circular loop for horizontally polarized working state (HP). The circularly polarized working state (CP) is achieved by exciting the monopole and the loop simultaneously with different phases. It is shown that the bandwidth overlapped...
