This review aims to bring together information about the development of radiation sources and the most striking examples of using of gyrotrons for spectroscopy and diagnostics of various media. It describes the main features of terahertz gyrotrons. It provides the most striking examples of modern CW and pulse gyrotrons working in the specified frequency range, highlights a number of topical applications...
A sheet beam traveling wave tube is designed, producing 231W at 94 GHz with a corresponding gain of 33.6 dB. A uniform longitudinal magnetic field of 0.9 T was used in the CST PIC simulation. The attenuator material is with a moderate loss tangent of 0.35 and a relative permittivity of 6.4. To get a stable operation of the tube, the reflectors for the input/output (I/O) structure are covered by attenuators...
We present a gas sensor system based on 245 GHz SiGe transmitter and receiver chips and a carbon molecular sieve gas concentrator. A gas mixture of 100 ppm methanol in ambient air at atmospheric pressure can be detected with high SNR of up to 430 at a pressure of 7.7 Pa after thermal desorption of the gas, which corresponds to a sensitivity of 230 ppb.
The first part of the experimental validation of the EU 1 MW, 170 GHz conventional (hollow-cavity) gyrotron for ITER was successfully completed at KIT. During this period two prototype tubes: (1) short-pulse (SP) gyrotron and (2) industrial continuous-wave (CW) gyrotron have been experimentally tested. The achieved RF output power was in range of 1 MW (SP) and 0.8 MW (CW) with a reasonable efficiency...
A 0.13THz 6W folded waveguide oscillator (FWO) is experimentally investigated for compact high-power terahertz radiation source. Because of absolute instability near the band edges, the tube may fall into oscillation when the beam current is sufficiently high. The output characteristics of oscillator is examined by using simulation code. The prototype tube has been fabricated and tested. The experimental...
A 0.38THz Traveling Wave Tube (TWT) based on the sine waveguide and sheet beam tunnel is proposed to amplify the terahertz wave. In this paper, the high frequency characteristics of sine waveguide with sheet beam tunnel are calculated by 3-D high frequency simulation software. From the particle-in-cell simulation results, this beam-wave interaction can produce output power 13W at 0.38THz, and the...
