The underpinning of transducers and analytical instrumentation, used for a range of measurement techniques in a variety of industrial sectors, is traced on the basis of the fundamental science on which it depends. A functional decomposition of the analytical method is used, and the role of the science that determines the operation of a range of instrumental elements and transducers is examined. The application to expert systems use is considered, in light of the information flow in the systems described.
