We present a simple method to fit, in a reproducible way, the effective amplified spontaneous emission bandwidth model to erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) characteristics, using four easily measurable quantities of a short EDFA. The model was used to predict the large signal gain of the EDFA as a function of length in different pump configurations and the validity of the model was tested experimentally. Our experimental results show excellent agreement with the predictions.
