Zirconia-toughened alumina was prepared by infiltration of zirconium n-propoxide in n-propanol into the alumina matrix. The precursor was decomposed within the pores of the matrix by in situ pyrolysis. Homogeneously distributed zirconia located mainly on the grain surfaces of the alumina grains was observed. Multiple infiltration allowed increase of the zirconia content to 16 wt%. Although unstabilised zirconia was precipitated, in some samples 50% ZrO 2 was present in tetragonal form after the final testing.
