The aim of this work is to compare the susceptibility of low and high density lipoproteins (LDL and HDL) obtained from young healthy subjects to oxidation induced by oxygenated free radicals (OH and O 2 ). Aqueous solutions of LDL and HDL (100 μg/ml proteins, 10 - 2 M sodium phosphate buffer, pH 7) were irradiated (0 to 200 Gy). The following markers of lipid peroxidation were quantitatively measured as a function of the absorbed radiation dose: (a) the decrease of vitamin E concentration, (b) the formation of thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS) and (c) conjugated dienes, and (d) the appearance of differential fluorescence. LDL showed a greater oxidazibility when compared to HDL for the lipid components, but the contrary was found for the protein components.
