Heating a suspension of zinc dust in 1-methylimidazole for 48 h under carbon dioxide atmosphere at 150 o C affords in very good yield the zinc(II) carboxylate {bis(1-methyl-2-imidazolecarboxylato)(1-methylimidazole)}zinc(II), [Zn(1-Me-2-Imc) 2 (1-MeIm)].The complex has been characterised by spectral and X-ray diffraction methods. [Zn(1-Me-2-Imc) 2 (1-MeIm)].THF crystallises in the triclinic system P-1. The zinc atom exhibits a trigonal-bipyramidal coordination. The 1-methyl-2-imidazolecarboxylato ligands display an N,O-bidentate coordination with the carboxylic oxygen atoms occupying the apices of the trigonal bipyramid. The nitrogen atoms of both carboxylate ligands and neutral 1-methylimidazole molecule are localised in the equatorial plane.
