Cheilitis is a superficial inflammation of the lip. It can be isolated or associated with stomatitis or peribuccal eczema. Contact hypersensitivity reactions are a frequent cause of cheilitis. Cosmetics and hygiene products are the most frequent causes. More rarely, allergic cheilitis is due to contact with a musical instrument, topical drugs, or food allergens. Cheilitis induced by the presence of dental material is rare and debated. Diagnosis depends on patch-tests beginning with the standard European series, cosmetics and other topical agents used by the patient. The examination will be completed with topical agents in question and a series of special tests.
