This paper aims to examine the likes (“thumbs up”) network of Hungarian political parties. The network contains 7 parties’ Facebook likes network. There are 3204 nodes and 28770 edges in the network. The research question of this paper is whether there is competition between the political parties for users in Hungary, and if the number of fans, posting activity and likes connections are influential factors in reaching people. The hypothesis of the paper is that parties do try to extend their network to reach more people, and furthermore, that the use of likes and posting activity are relevant factors in the network growth. The findings of the research falsify this hypothesis, however, because parties turn out to form closed communities in the networks and have their own users and an ERGM estimate shows that the above factors have not been influential in connection development.
