Chemistry of functionalized thiolates: syntheses and structures of neutral, monomeric [Zn(SC 6 H 4 X-4) 2 (N N)], where X=H, NH 2 and OH, and (N N)=nitrogen bases 2,2'-bpy, phen and tmen
Six neutral monomers of the type [Zn(SC 6 H 4 X-4) 2 (N N)] (where X=H, NH 2 , OH; (N N)=tetramethylethylenediamine (tmen); 2,2'-bipyridyl (bpy) and 1,10-phenanthroline (phen)) have been synthesized in quantitative yield by reacting bis(4-substituted benzenethiolato)zinc(II) with an equimolar amount of the dinitrogen bases. The crystal and molecular structures of all the compounds were determined by X-ray crystallography. A simple neutral compound [Zn(SPh) 2 (bpy)] was also prepared for comparison. The compounds show some interesting X H...S (where X=O or N) hydrogen bonding pattern in the solid state.
