Continuing developments in video technology make videotaping through a slit-lamp a useful capability available at reasonable cost. An updated technical basis of equipment needed to select or design an apparatus for slit-lamp videography is reviewed. As an overview, the contemporary optimal slit-lamp should be zoom optics and rheostat illumination, the beam splitter should be a mirror or 70 type, the camera should have maximal light sensitivity (0.5 lux) with high resolution (>420 lines). The video format used to connect the camera, recorder, and monitor should be the S-Video format, the recorder should be SP-Umatic or Super VHS for documentation or consumer VHS for patient education, the recorder should be equipped with a microphone for audio commentary of the videotaped examination, and the monitor should be a professional 13- or 15-inch monitor. A video printer can be useful but is not necessary.
