Pendant les 20 dernières années, grâce à la mise en oeuvre des méthodes cladistiques, la connaissance de la phylogénie de nombreux groupes fossiles d'agnathes, de poissons et d'amphibiens primitifs a été précisée. Leur valeur de marqueurs biostratigraphiques, en particulier les microrestes, a été explorée, surtout au Paléozoïque. Il en est de même pour la reconstitution des paléoenvironnements et le test des modèles paléogéographiques proposés par les géophysiciens. Les travaux interdisciplinaires et les coopérations internationales ainsi que l'ouverture de nombreux nouveaux chantiers de fouille ont été aussi déterminants dans ce renouveau.
During the last 20 years, thanks to the use of the cladistic methods, the knowledge of the phylogenyof many fossil groups of agnathans, fishes and primitive amphibians was specified. They have been used as biostratigraphic markers, especially in regard with Palaeozoic microremains. They also have been used for palaeoenvironmental reconstructions and testing palaeogeographic models hypothetized by geophysicians. Interdisciplinary studies, international cooperations as well as exploration of many new fossiliferous localities also participated to this renewal.
