The main goal of this paper is the analysis of interregional migration pattern of Slovakia between 1970 and 1990 and the expected consequences for the population. The redistributing effects of migration are best captured by the use of migration efficiency measures both for administrative districts and for the flows between them. A permanent decline both of interregional migration and its share in total migration and a prevailing orientation to the short-distance migration is evident. A part of demographic disparity between the north and the south of the country was transformed into the differences between the rural and urban areas. The main demographic resources in peripheral areas in the north and east are partly exhausted and partly reoriented to a short distance migration shifts.
