The article proposes a clinically relevant definition of suffering. Then, based on a review of the existing data on pain and symptoms in patients with advanced cancer and the psychosocial and existential distress among patients, their families, and professional caregivers, the authors propose a taxonomy of the factors that contribute to suffering. This taxonomy is meant to serve as a framework for diagnosis, therapeutic interventions, and ongoing scientific communication.
