Determining of a probability distribution of a total measurement error, needed for a coverage factor and expanded uncertainty exact evaluation, is rather difficult when the distributions of the total error components are not normal. On the other hand a calculation of the higher order moments of the total error is easy if the component moments are known. An approximating function of the total error distribution can be found on this basis. As such function a weighted sum of three normal (Gaussian) functions, named as a tri-normal function, is proposed in this paper. The tri-normal function parameters calculation is possible using the 2-nd (variance), 4-th and 6-th order moments. A coverage factor estimation, based on the tri-normal function, is relatively simple and the difference between the resulting confidence level, given by the coverage factor estimate, and the postulated confidence level, is relatively small if the total error components have normal, Student's, rectangular or even bi-rectangular distributions.
