The main parameter, which determines the quality of casting moulds, is the wettability of the hydrophobic pattern surfaces by binders and ceramic slurries. The improvement of wettability can be attained either by addition of surfactants to the binders or surface modifications of patterns. A quantitative characteristic of the effectivity of these modifications can be attained by the wetting angle measurements. In our work, a new method has been developed for determining this parameter from the sessile drop shape together with the surface tension for the liquid/air interface. Using the method preliminary measurements have been carried out for the Ekosil silica binder and model hydrophobic surfaces. These measurements have been correlated with results concerning the kine-tics of binders and slurries spreading over pattern surfaces.
