Cattle slurry is a valuable fertilizer, but it causes potential risk of microbiological contamination of soil and water. There is a lot of microorganisms, also pathogens dangerous for peoples' and animals' health, in cattle slurry. Therefore very important is to choose the proper and effective slurry treatment methods. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of mesophilic methane fermentation process in the removal of pathogenic microorganisms from slurry made on the basis of the survival of Salmonella Enteritidis in this fertilizer in a semi-technical scale. Methane fermentation was carried out in a special reactor for 10 days at 35st. C. Samples for researches were obtained l hour after inoculation, and then after l, 2, 3, 4, 7 and 10 days. The number of bacteria was determined by the MPN method. Material from the carriers were introduced to peptone water (24 h incubation. At 37'C), then transferred to the R-V broth (24 hour at 43°C), and finally it was sieved on BPLS and XLD agar (24 hour at 37°C). The daily reduction rate of Salmonella Enteritidis in the process of methane fermentation was 0.59 [log MPN/day]. The theoretical survival time was equal 12.94 day. These data show that the mesophilic methane fermentation is an effective method of slurry hygienization.
