This work concerns the influence of temperature, the presence (lack of oxygen and different carbohydrates) on solubilization of tribasic calcium phosphate, iron phosphate and Thomas basic slag in samples of bottom sediments of gyttja, sapropel, "dy" and tyrfopel types from lakes of different trophic lakes of the Mazurian Lake District. In samples of 4 types of bottom sediments more PO4-P...
The development of production and application of plastic packages, much connected with their high resistance to the action of environmental factors, is a problem from the point of view of environmental protection. While discussing methods of reuse of plastic waste one has to consider the possibility of food packages' production from recycled polymers. When conditions which ensure the safety of a consumer...
This paper presents a discussion of selected factors affecting distribution and behaviour of mercury species in bottom sediments. This paper demonstrates that microorganisms, inorganic sulphides, organic matter, iron and manganese hydroxides, red-ox potential, chlorides and temperature are the main factors controlling the behaviour of this element in bottom sediments.
Sewage sludge was examined for keratinolytic and keratinophilic fungi by means of a multi-tempera-ture (23, 26, 29, 33, 37 and 45oC) hair baiting method. Results indicate that this method can be a useful tool for determination of the influence of temperature and other factors on fungal composition in sludge and evaluation of health risk posed by fungal pathogens. The use of the method facilitated...
Zoosporic and conidial fungi species and environmental factors in 12 various sites of the River Biebrza in Biebrza National Park were studied. Samples of water were collected in autumn 1999 and spring 2000 for hydrochemical analysis in order to determine the number of fungal species. Buckwheat-seeds, hemp- seeds, cellophane and snake exuviae were used as bait during exposure in a laboratory. 199 lower...
The aim of the study was to estimate the acceleration of birth parameters: body length, body weight, head and chest circumference of Lublin newborns as a response to environmental changes observed since 1964 till 2001. The environmental conditions changes were characterized by: health care standards, average consumption of selected foodstuffs, furnishings, level of education and income of households...
Lung cancer risk factor in the immigrant population of an industrial area in Poland was examined in a case-control study. Both, relative and summary risks were calculated with adjustment for the following factors: cigarette smoking, alcohol consumption, atmospheric pollution in the place of residence, occupation, education and age. The multivariate logistic analysis indicated that cigarette smoking...
The aim of this investigation was the biodegradation of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) film modified with Bionolle by fungi. The samples in the form of composite films were prepared by homogenization and extrusion. The effect of polymer composition on mechanical properties was determined. We proved that the composite film had higher tensile strength and elongation at break than LDPE. Examined films...
Bacteria can adapt to various environmental factors such as temperature, pressure, ions, nutrients and toxic substances by modifying their membranes to maintain them in a fluid state. These modifications within the cytoplasmatic membrane particularly result from changes in the fatty acid composition and interaction between proteins and lipids. Fatty acids, mainly phospholipid fatty acids, play a role...
The influence of the presence of bacteriophage ZD5, temperature, pH and the interaction of these factors on survival of Y. enterocolitica cells in pond water and buffers was examined. The presence of bacteriophage ZD5 and temperature have substantial influence on survival of Y. enterocolitica cells in buffers with different pHs. The statistical analysis showed a significant influence of the presence...
Multiple and interacting environmental factors are involved in the development of non-melanoma skin cancers (NMSC) in the Caucasian population. NMSC include basal cell carcinomas and squamous cell skin carcinoma. The aim of our paper was to present literature data on the etiopathogenesis of NMSC with special stress on environmental agents such as: ultraviolet radiation (including sunbathing), ozone...
The problem of noise in the industries around Sivas has been examined in this study; and noise measurement and survey studies have been carried out at concrete traverse, cement, iron and steel and textile factories located in this region. A questionnaire was completed by 256 workers during this study in order to determine the physical, physiological, and psycho-social impacts of the noise on humans...
The incidence of diabetes type 1, a chronic autoimmune disease, may reach the status of an epidemic in the 21st century. The highest incidence of diabetes in the world is observed in Finland. However, in the last 8 years a dynamic rise has been observed in Poland, moving the country toward an intermediate level incidence classification. Environmental factors seem to play a part in the observed increase...
Environmental factors such as high fat content in a diet affect pro- and antioxidative balances in tissues. Our study was designed to determine whether a four-week diet enriched to a total of 15% fat content with either a polyunsaturated (linoleic) or saturated (palmitic) fatty acid predisposes or protects the liver tissue against oxidative stress in both non-diabetic and diabetic rats. In the rat...
The purpose of our study was to analyze hospitalizations for inflammatory bowel disease noted in the Department of Gastroenterology, Medical University of Lublin. Cases of patients hospitalized in the Department of Gastroenterology, Medical University of Lublin in 1997-2007 were retrospectively analyzed. The material studied included patients’ case histories and medical records that were used to select...
The current research was carried out to find the most effective environmental factors in plant species distribution. For this purpose, a study was conducted in the Taleghan rangelands of Tehran province. Based on a vegetation map and field surveys, indicator vegetation types were identified. Within each type, 3 parallel transects with 150 m length, each containing 15 quadrates (according to vegetation...
Tailings dam failures are relatively rare but can cause extremely high and long-term impacts on the environment. The Sasa tailings dam collapsed in August 2003 and caused an intensive flow of tailings material through the Kamenica River all the way to Lake Kalimanci, where most of the tailings material discharged. This study deals with the characterization of surficial lake sediments from Lake Kalimanci...
