Ethanol (EtOH) abuse in pregnancy is known to produce serious damage to internal organs of the fetus, a condition in humans that is classified as "fetal alcohol syndrome". Cadmium (Cd), a heavy metal pollutant of the environment, represents another toxin that produces retarded fetal growth and teratogenic effects. The developing brain is particularly sensitive to both toxins, being affected...
Pretreatment and analysis of urea and uric acid in body fluids and those of newly identified toxic compounds in dental material are described. Urea is a major uremic toxin. The accumulation of urea in blood may promote serious uremia syndrome if not regularly removed. Thus, an accurate analysis of blood urea is required for precise diagnosis. There have not been reported so far for differential analysis...
Fluorine exists in hard tissues (bones, teeth), in which it plays a structural function. Small quantities of fluorine are found in biological solvents and soft tissues. Fluoride ions are not enzyme cofactors but may influence their activity. In this paper, the acitivity of ICDH (isocitric dehydrogenase, E. C. 1.1.1.42) was tested in the presence of different concentrations of fluoride ions (from 0...
Human action is now altering the global environment on an unprecedented scale and thus contributes to environmental change eventually affecting human health. The range of potential environment-related health problems is very wide. This work is an attempt to analyze the exposure of the population to environmental factors and of the health significance of this exposure. As the subject is very broad...
This paper concerns environmental traffic road control in street canyons. It based on recent hardware advances and 1VHS technologies. In particular, traffic video-detectors for efficient localisation and recognition of 3-D vehicles in traffic scene are described. A two-level traffic control idea for street canyon is proposed and possible extensions for network problems are addressed. The advanced...
The suppresion of chaos in a two-dimensional map, which models the competition between the populations of two species, is presented. As a result, steady-state and different periodic motions, embedded in the chaotic attractor, have been stabilized. PACS numbers: 05.45, 87.10, 07.05. T
This work presents the results of research on physico-chemical and microbiological amounts of heterotrophic bacteria, Actinomycetes, filamentous and yeast fungi in underground waters of aquifers of Omulewskie Reservoir in the Mazurian Lake District in 1989-1992/1993. The examination included water from 11 wells (20-64 m) and 3 piezometric bore-holes (6.5-23.5 m) on woodland (control well), managed...
An attempt has been made to determine the quality of the atmospheric air (n= 176 samples) and soil (n = 54 samples) at the base of co-occurrence of Pb, Zn, Ni, Cu, Cd, Cr, Co, and Mn in Szczyrk town and environs. Several sources of pollution: the steel mills in Triniec, the Upper Silesian Industrial Centre and Bielsko-Biała town can influence the air and soil in Szczyrk, but the main local source...
This paper reports the effect of increasing concentrations of the salts Li+, K+, Al3ł, Hg2+, Cd2+, Cr3+ on the kinetics of desulfurication in Desulfotomaculum ruminis bacteria. The ranges of concentration of these salts which do not disturb the desulfurication, inhibit this process and prevent it from occurring have been established.
Ellagic acid (EA), known as a naturally occurring plant phenol, has shown a significant influence on genotoxicity and mutagenicity induced by benzo(a)pyrene (B(a)P) in experiments with sister chromatid exchange (SCE) and Ames Salmonella typhimurium revertants. The maximum inhibitory effect of EA has been detected at low levels of B(a)P doses administered intraperitoneal to mice. The frequency of SCE...
The aim of this paper was to examine the activity of lysosomal enzymes after intoxication with chlorfenvinvos and dichlorvos - phosphoorganic insecticides. Investigations were carried out on male Wistar rats weighing 180-230 g. Rats were divided into two groups: control and treated. Rats of treated group were receiving oil solution of chlorfenvinvos at doses of 0.5 LD50 or 0.1 LD5(), determinations...
The spectrophotometric FIA method was used to determine L-ascorbic acid in rats exposed to cadmium (5 ppm, 50 ppm) and zinc (250 ppm). An attempt has been made to explain the nature of complexes which are formed in the system Me(II) - H2Asc - H2O and the interactions between these compounds in an organism.
This paper reviews the present status of sewage, wasterwater treatment and water quality management in Slovakia. The impact of discharged wastewater on the quality of receiving waters is presented. Legislation in Slovakia is compared with European legislation concerning water quality effluent standards. Typical treatment methods used are described and the problems of wastewater monitoring discussed...
The translocation of zinc, cadmium and lead ions in vegetative mycelia of four species of mycorrhizal fungi was studied. Strong accumulation of zinc, cadmium and lead in aerial mycelium of fungi growing in contaminated medium, and inhibition of the metals' translocation was found. These results were related to species of mycorrhizal fungus and the metal ions that were used for the contaminated medium.
