The protection of the state border is one of the basic functions of the state and one of the most important factors that have a direct influence on internal and external security of the state. The Republic of Poland tries to maximize the security of borders against crime which recently has become a domain of organized crime organizations. The body responsible for protecting the economic and ecological interests in Polish marine areas on behalf of the Border Guard is Maritime Regional Unit of Border Guard with its headquarters in Gdansk. In order to carry out its tasks effectively the Border Guard cooperates with various bodies inside the country, such as: the Navy, Police or Marine Office, as well as carries out international cooperation with border forces of the Baltic Sea region states and liaison officers from other countries.
