The author presents some aspects of constitutional role of the State in environmental protection in accordance with the principle of sustainable development. The following issues were analysed:-the importance of constitutional regulation establishing tasks of the State in environmental protection from the formal-legal, as well as material-legal stand; -the importance of sustainable development notion as an element of constitutional norms; -the contents of constitutional rules of law regulating environmental protection area in the context of the principle of sustainable development and -the question of constitutional and legal value of this principle.
