The Society of Hungarian Linguistics celebrates the one hundredth anniversary of its foundation in 2004. The framework for that celebration will be provided by the general assembly of the Society to be held early in December. The addresses and talks to be delivered there will be published in next year's first issue of this journal. The present paper marks the jubilee by a brief recapitulation of the circumstances of foundation.
