In this paper the author studied the transition from instructional to categorical generalization of basic colours and variables that influence the generalization process in five-year-old children. He has confirmed that categorical generalization of basic colours is mainly dependent on the degree of familiarity with the names of colours and their shades, speech development and age. He has not confirmed that children capable of categorical generalization are in transition to the concrete operational thinking stage (of cognitive developmental theory).
