It is expected that the alumni leaving the university in, say, 2025, should remain professionally active at least until 2070. It is impossible to foresee technologicat and social development of the world at such a time scale. However, it is indisputable that the future alumni must be prepared properly to be able to adapt to the quickly changing environment. The curricula in the future universities should be flexible and adaptable to the situation. The function of the future university should be focused more on developing ability of sound reasoning and permanent learning and less on forcing specialized knowledge which by its nature becomes quickly outdated. Academic freedom and independence from government bureaucracy are necessary conditions for successful operation of the future university. Unfortunately, the present trend of events in Poland is against such a vision. The officials from the Ministry of Science and Higher Education aspire to have a tight control over even smali details of the curricula. In the highly efficient U.S. system of higher education the Department of Education does not interfere in curricula and organization of autonomous universities. It is probably unrealistic to adopt such a model in Poland. But we should do everything possible to assure academic autonomy and independence from the Ministry for at least a few leading Polish universities. Otherwise, we shall have not the slightest chance to compete with the best universities of the world.
