The paper presents the conception of a new morphology of the standard Slovak language. The description of the formal morphology is directed by principles that lie in the basis of explanation of the morphological structures. The key concepts are: the principle of opposite homomorphism, marked and unmarked morphological structures, morphosemantic, morphotactic and uniform transparency of paradigms, inflectional classes, the dynamic of the morphological system. The background of the approach to the functional morphology is the principle of the functional motivation of morphology. The morphological means are classified on the bases of the syntactical criterion and described as subsystems of functional equivalent units.
