Moving the centre of gravity of the actions of the naval forces of the waters of the ocean-going into coastal waters relates not only to carrying out typical activities of military nature in these areas. The implementation of tasks such as combating crime at sea and the protection of merchant shipping becomes very important. LtCdr Grzegorz Kolanski writes about a new generation of patrol forces. Its mainstay is a type of ships called OPV (Offshore Patrol Vessel). These ships offer naval forces a cost-effective and general-purpose platforms that bridge the capability gap between war fighting and policy tasks. They are very attractive especially for small navies.
