Jazykovedny casopis has been, under this title, published since 1953 - its previous numbers were parts of other journals and its main subject matter was focused on historical and dialectological problems. Present-day position of the journal as a theoretical and methodological organ of Slovak linguistics has been established since the half of 60 years of the 20th century when its content was inspired by accelerated development in the world linguistics of that time. The journal presented research articles that had a principal importance for a modern development of Slovak linguistics and they have subsequently resulted in many monographs and collective works. It is open to all philologies as well as to the related disciplines (semiotics, psychology, philosophy etc.). It devotes a lot of space not only to analytical reviews of the most significant home publications, but also to reviews and notices about foreign production. The journal brings also profiles of prominent linguists and their bibliographies.
