The study shows that comet moth cocoon fibers exhibit radiative cooling properties with enhanced solar reflectivity and thermal emissivity. Optical waveguiding due to transverse Anderson localization of light is also observed in these natural fibers.
The study shows how Saharan silver ants utilize a uniquely shaped hair coating to substantially enhance reflectivity in the solar spectrum and emissivity in the mid-infrared. Biomimetic metasurfaces with such radiative-cooling properties are also reported.
We report strong and non-volatile optical modulation utilizing electron-doping induced phase change of a perovskite, SmNiO3. Broadband modulation (λ=400nm–17μm) is demonstrated using thin-film SmNiO3, and narrowband modulation is realized with metasurfaces integrated with SmNiO3.
The electron‐doping‐induced phase transition of a prototypical perovskite SmNiO3 induces a large and non‐volatile optical refractive‐index change and has great potential for active‐photonic‐device applications. Strong optical modulation from the visible to the mid‐infrared is demonstrated using thin‐film SmNiO3. Modulation of a narrow band of light is demonstrated using plasmonic metasurfaces integrated...
There has been persistent exploration of new active materials and novel device architectures to dynamically control light with larger modulation depth and increased spectral range, at faster speed, and using less power. In this presentation, I will present experimental results showing that samarium nickelate (SmNiO3), a prototypical phase-change perovskite nickelate, exhibits reversible large refractive...
