We have demonstrated a 2.5 Gb/s, 60 km long-reach WDM-TDM PON using a bidirectional SOA-Raman hybrid amplifier. The proposed hybrid PON has the potential to address as many as 1024 subscribers.
16/spl times/10 Gb/s WDM signals were successfully transmitted over 4/spl times/40 km of SMF using LOAs combined with dispersion compensating RFAs. No add/drop-induced penalty was observed when 15 channels out of 16 channels were dynamically add/dropped.
A gain clamped SOA combined with a distributed Raman fiber amplifier has a gain of 19.6 dB and a noise figure of 2.9 dB. Sixteen channels of 10 Gb/s signals are successfully transmitted over 5 spans of 80 km even under dynamic add-drop situations.
