Physical gelation of liquid crystals with low molecular weight gelators leads to the formation of a new class of anisotropic gels that have great potentials for optical, electrical, and photofunctional materials. The liquid crystalline (LC) physical gels are microphase-separated anisotropic composites consisting of liquid crystals and self-assembled solid fibers. For these materials, the isotropic–anisotropic...
Video compression aims to remove spatial-temporal redundancies where the encoded bitstream, particularly the motion vectors, may not represent the actual motions in the video. Hence, moving object detection in the compressed video stream is a technically challenging task. In this work, we propose a novel moving object detection algorithm using frame sub-sampling method in the state-of-the-art HEVC...
We prepared water-soluble anthracene-cored poly(aryl ether) dendrimers wG1 and wG2, together with lipophilic dendrimers G1 and G2, and examined their photochemical properties. Water-soluble dendrimers wG1 and wG2 produced excimer emissions peaking at 463nm and 447nm, respectively, in water at a concentration of 10 −5 M, indicating that these dendrimers could form aggregates under highly diluted...
We synthesized thermotropic amphiphilic mesogens with hydrophilic groups at both terminals through the reaction of 2-hydroxyethylamine with ω-bromo-1-(4-(4-(2-hydroxyethyl)phenylazo)phenoxy)alkylamine. We examined the thermal and orientational properties of these mesogens. The mesogens formed fluid smectic phases due to interactions between the hydrophilic units. On heating a thermotropic amphiphilic...
The photolysis of naphtho[1,8-de]-1,3-dichalcogeninylidene 1-oxide derivatives (4 and 5) at >290 nm generates ketenes together with naphtho[1,8-cd]-1,2-dichalcogenole, which were confirmed by the trapping experiments and the direct observation using IR spectroscopy. The generation of ketenes from the selenium compounds 5 is more effective than that from the sulfur analogs 4.
