This paper extends the "worth of a watt" analysis presented during INTELEC 78 which allows equipment designers to estimate the worth of energy used in Bell System central offices. First, the results are shown to be relatively insensitive to the underlying inflation rate of the economy, but depend on an estimate of the relative inflation rate of the cost of electric energy. Then, FETs are...
The capital equivalent cost of consuming ac or dc power in a central office is determined as a function of service life, electric rate and energy inflation rate. The results are used to compute life-cycle equipment costs and to determine the most economical operating point of non-linear power processing devices.
The general characteristics of a new power processing circuit called the Triport1 are described. The Triport is classified into ac and dc types and its relation to other power processing circuits is established. System arrangements of dc and ac Triports are outlined and comparisons drawn with conventional systems. Finally, some brief comments on discrete Triports are given.
A description of the organization of the Electronic Power Systems Laboratory at Bell Laboratories is given. An overview of the variety of power converter developments in the laboratory is presented citing typical applications. The standardization effort in power is described outlining progress to date. Finally, the activities in various support functions are discussed.
