A simple one-dimensional account of space charge in an anode-cathode (AK) gap is based on a transit time model. Two limiting cases are treated: thermionic and field emission. Each case is compared to experimental thermionic and field emission data in the literature and the correspondence is shown to be good.
Contact resistance is important to integrated circuits and thin film devices, carbon nanotube based cathodes and interconnects, field emitters, wire-array z-pinches, metal-insulator-vacuum junctions, and high power microwave sources, etc. In other applications, the electrical contacts are formed by thin film structures of a few microns thickness, such as in micro-electromechanical system (MEMS) relays...
Summary form only given. Foils may soon become necessary to achieve the required mass for higher current-driven x-ray sources. They may also offer useful options for x-ray pulse shaping and as imploding liners for magnetized target fusion. This paper reports our latest design and experimental progress on the dominant instability, the magneto-Rayleigh-Taylor instability (MRT). Planar Al foils as thin...
Summary form only given. Sandia in collaborations with a number of other institutions, is developing a new paradigm in pulsed power technology: the Linear Transformer Driver (LTD) technology. This approach can provide very compact devices that can deliver very fast high current and high voltage pulses. The output pulse rise time and width can be easily tailored to the specific application needs. We...
Summary form only given. Recently there has been a renewed interest in the inverted magnetron because of its larger cathode area, reduction of electron end-loss, and substantially faster startup in comparison with the conventional magnetron. A recently conceived embodiment of the magnetron, called the recirculating planar magnetron, RPM [1], incorporates these attractive features. The electron dynamics...
