Rice is the staple food in many countries and monitoring the area of rice fields is demanded. The backscatter behavior of rice as function of time is so unique that it can be used to distinguish rice from other crops. In this paper, scattering matrix decomposition models were adopted to identify rice paddy fields from multi-temporal polarimetric SAR images. A series of Radarsat-2 polarimetric SAR...
A Stokes vector based non-data-aided DGD monitoring scheme for 40-Gb/s polarization-multiplexed coherent optical OFDM systems with low-bandwidth sampling is reported. The DGD estimation error is less than 2.5 ps after 1000-km long-haul transmissions.
We propose a technique for polarization-mode-dispersion (PMD) estimation in 16-QAM coherent polarization-multiplexed single-carrier system using complementary Golay training sequences and channel response filter analysis. The technique is experimentally proved to be fast and highly accurate.
We demonstrate a PMD measurement technique for 10-Gbit/s signals using time domain evolution of Stokes vector with a low sampling-rate coherent receiver. An accuracy of 2ps DGD is achieved over 0 to 25 ps.
We experimentally demonstrate full-transmission chromatic dispersion estimation with high accuracy in 40-Gb/s coherent polarization-multiplexed single-carrier system using binary complementary Golay training sequences. The technique is verified to be robust against polarization-mode-dispersion and amplified-spontaneous-emission noise.
Prognostics and Health Management (PHM) technologies have emerged as a key enabler to provide early indications of system faults and perform predictive maintenance actions. While implementing PHM depends on real-time acquiring the present and future health status of a system accurately. For electronic subsystems, built-in-test (BIT) makes it not difficult to achieve these goals. However, reliable...
We present a prototype of an integrated blood pressure (BP) and electrocardiogram (ECG) device for multi-parameter physiologic monitoring. A standard BP pressure cuff and an ordinary wristband have been modified to incorporate in them dry ECG electrodes made of thin conductive fabric. The modified BP cuff and wristband are coupled with commercially available hardware and software to harvest simultaneous...
The effectiveness of an imaging technique is often based on the ability to image quantitatively both morphological and physiological functions of the tissue. Here we present several ultrasound-based imaging techniques capable of visualizing both structural and functional properties of living tissue. Each imaging system utilizes custom-made, targeted nanoparticles developed to probe specific molecular...
Instruction-grain lifeguards monitor executing programs at the granularity of individual instructions to quickly detect bugs and security attacks, but their fine-grain nature incurs high monitoring overheads. This article identifies three common sources of these overheads and proposes three techniques that together constitute a general-purpose hardware acceleration framework for lifeguards.
Instruction-grain program monitoring tools, which check and analyze executing programs at the granularity of individual instructions, are invaluable for quickly detecting bugs and security attacks and then limiting their damage (via containment and/or recovery). Unfortunately, their fine-grain nature implies very high monitoring overheads for software-only tools, which are typically based on dynamic...
