Almost all PWM converters using bipolar transistors experience the problem of reverse transistor conduction. This effect is analysed for various types of base drive. It is shown to be most serious for low impedance direct drives. A mathematical model is developed for this case and verified experimentally. Problems associated with turn-on and turn-off in the reverse conduction mode are investigated.
After an overview of literature on base drives, a new transformer coupled base drive circuit is described which is particularly suitable for high current transistor switches. It has the advantages of very low component count and cost, small size and high efficiency with no driver transistors being rated at full base current. The operation of the main transistor in deep saturation results in low conduction...
