Using wireless networks in medical Cyber-Physical Systems could be challenging. Because the medical system not only assists the medical personnel to deliver medical services to the patient but also needs to deal with accidental situations such as communication failures without compromising the patient's safety. Previous research work tackled the communication failure problems in medical CPS from architecture...
In a medical environment such as Intensive Care Unit, there are many possible reasons to cause errors, and one important reason is the effect of human intellectual tasks. When designing an interactive healthcare system such as medical Cyber-Physical-Human Systems (CPHSystems), it is important to consider whether the system design can mitigate the errors caused by these tasks or not. In this paper,...
In a medical environment such as Intensive Care Unit, there are many possible reasons to cause errors, and one important reason is the effect of human intellectual tasks. In this paper, we first provide five categories of generic intellectual tasks of humans, where tasks among each category may lead to potential medical errors. Then, we present an integrated modeling framework to model a medical Cyber-Physical-Human...
Improving effectiveness and safety of patient care is an ultimate objective for medical cyber- physical systems. However, the existing medical best practice guidelines in hospital handbooks are often lengthy and difficult for medical staff to remember and apply clinically. Statechart is a widely used model in designing complex systems and enables rapid prototyping and clinical validation with medical...
In medical cyber-physical environments, synchronizing supervisory medical systems, physicians' behavior and patient conditions in compliance with best practice workflow is essential for patient safety. However, patient conditions change rapidly and asynchronously, so workflows have to be adapted to the changes safely. In this paper, we propose a workflow adaptation and validation protocol to help...
In cyber-physical-human medical environments, coordinating supervisory medical systems and medical staff to perform treatments in in accordance with best practice is essential for patient safety. However, the dynamics of patient conditions and the non-deterministic nature of potential side effects of treatments pose significant challenges. In this paper, we propose a validation protocol to enforce...
Improving effectiveness and safety of healthcare infrastructure is an important issue for cyber-physical-human medical systems. However, statistics indicates that preventable medical error rate is highest in ICU as compared to other hospital units. Many preventable medical errors are result from unintended deviation from the best practice guidelines, because medical staff are under tremendous pressure...
The Physically-Asynchronous Logically-Synchronous (PALS) system is a recently proposed architectural pattern for cyber-physical systems. It guarantees a logically synchronous design abstraction for real-time distributed computations. In this work, we develop a new middleware, called PALSware, to support an efficient and robust implementation of the PALS system and its extensions. PALSware guarantees...
Cooperating medical devices, envisioned by Integrated Clinical Environment (ICE) of Medical Device Plug-and-Play (MDPnP), is expected to improve the safety and the quality of patient care. To ensure safety, the cooperating medical devices must be thoroughly verified and tested. However, concurrent control of devices without proper coordination poses a significant challenge for the verification of...
Most dynamic voltage and frequency scaling (DVS) techniques adjust only CPU parameters; however, recent embedded systems provide multiple adjustable clocks which can be independently tuned. When considering multiple components, energy optimal frequencies depend on task set characteristics such as the number of CPU and memory access cycles. In this work, we propose a realistic energy model considering...

As flash memory became popular over various platforms, there is a strong demand on the performance degradation problem, due to the special characteristics of flash memory. This research proposes the design of a file-system-aware flash translation layer, in which a filter mechanism is designed to separate the access requests of file-system metadata and file contents for better performance. A recovery...
This work explores the unique characteristics of flash memory in serving as a cache layer for disks. The experiments show that the proposed management scheme could save up to 20% energy consumption while reduce the read response time by the two third and the write response time by the five sixth of their counterparts. The estimated lifetime of the flash-memory cache is significantly improved as well.
