A novel phase-shifted optical analog-to-digital converter using cascaded step-size MMI as quantization module is demonstrated. The cascaded MMI on SOI has a compact footprint of 7.5×100 μm2 and ultra-low insertion loss of 0.2dB.
Regular, periodic arranged structures were fabricated on p-side-up AlGaInP LEDs through dry etching. The dimension of the structures was optimized by Monte Carlo ray tracing simulation. Due to the appearance of an additional escape cone for light extraction enabled by surface structures, it significantly improves the performance of the chip.
A polarization-independent waveguide circulator design is proposed which is well suited for monolithic integration. The circulator consists of multimode interferometers, half-wave plates, and Faraday rotators all in waveguide form. The length of the circulator is 712 mum. Simulations show the circulator to have 25 dB of isolation and 1.3 dB of insertion loss at a wavelength of 1.55 mum
