This paper demonstrates that our very thin film STO capacitor can be located under re-distribution layer (RDL) of WLP/FO-WLP package and is effective for reduction of the power supply noise of LSIs. Their Shmoo plots show improvement of operable frequency and power supply voltage reduction, as results of the improved power integrity realized by our Sub-RDL STO thin film capacitors.
In this paper, a method of recording food intake using intra-body communication technology and estimating food sizes by measuring its electrical properties is described. The method uses high-frequency signals to detect contact and estimate food sizes when the food makes contact with the cutlery before consumption. Previous studies have addressed detection of food contact and identification of food...
Energy harvesting is an attractive option to generate power for different low power stand-alone electronic devices. Dielectric Elastomer Generator (DEG) is a special variable capacitor generator which, by virtue of its variable capacitance property, can convert vibrational mechanical energy to electrical energy. Hence the DEGs can be used as a means to harvest electrical energy from various environmental...
In this study, we have developed a basic system of an ingestible core body thermometer powered by a gastric acid battery. A custom integrated circuit (IC) with voltage boosting, coding, modulating and transmitting functions was prototyped. A small gastric acid battery based on a pair of Mg and Pt thin-film electrodes was also fabricated by microfabrication technology. Charge storage in a storage capacitor...
In this study, we report the development result of a supercapacitor as a power supply system for wireless sensor network (WSN) systems. Our supercapacitor is an electric double layer capacitor (EDLC) using an environmentally friendly electrolyte, which is made of a potassium hydroxide (KOH) solution and a charcoal and a steel plate. The EDLC using a charcoal, a steel and KOH as element materials (charcoal...
The system which logs measurements of environmental parameters or states of the object structural/constructional elements is discussed. The system demonstrates an autonomous work time of more than one year and provides the reading of accumulated data using radio frequency identification technology. The design of a device for energy harvesting from the power line electric field providing autonomous...
This article induces the key points and test principles of the developed the digital carpet electrostatic tester, which is used to measure the electrostatic charge amount generated by the friction between the shoes and the carpet when people walking on the carpet. The design of the hand-held electrode is based on the principle of capacitor divider. The paper proposed a static calibration based on...
Recently it was demonstrated that an asymmetric DRAM capacitor stack can introduce non-volatility and at the same time outperform ferroelectric HfO2 based FeRAM in terms of cycle endurance. With the present work, we provide an in-depth study of the underlying mechanisms and perform a comprehensive retention study that characterizes ferroelectric memories. Piezoelectric force microscopy is applied...
Ferroelectric hafnium oxide (HfO2)attracted a lot of interests since its discovery in 2007. Its scalability and CMOS compatibility are two advantages over conventional ferroelectric materials, favoring new device integration. Doped ferroelectric HfO2 Metal/Insulator/Metal capacitors have been widely studied for DRAM and FeFET applications. Silicon electrodes have not been discussed in much detail...
This paper studies a capacitive coupling wireless power transfer (CCWPT) for charging electric vehicles by using the dielectric substrate outside of a vehicle. The CCWPT can replace a conventional inductive coupling wireless power transfer because it has less electro-magnetic interference (EMI) and heat dissipation. However, since the CCWPT has limitation on transferring high power due to too small...
This paper presents an improved indirect feedback instrumentation amplifier for reading ECG signals. The circuit uses a charge pump module and an integral feedback offset suppression module. The input common mode range (ICMR) is extended, and the electrode offset and baseline drift in the ECG signal are suppressed. The circuit is designed by using 0.18μm CMOS process. The simulation shows that the...
The space charge accumulation in polymeric materials is one of the important behaviors of pre-ageing phenomena in electrical insulations. The Pulsed electro-acoustic (PEA) method is an appropriate method to understand the space charge behavior, but some kind of charges such as charges with high speed are hardly detected by the method. To understand the whole information of charges, that is Q(t) behaviors,...
Both the space charges and the currents in the solid dielectrics are important properties to describe the insulating and dielectric behaviors of insulation materials. Usually, they are measured by the individual appropriate method, such as PEA method for space charges and pico-ammeter for leakage currents, however, as weak signals should be treated with, the information obtained from the measurements...
We report a vertical-channel oxide thin-film transistor (VTFT) with a channel length of 300 nm. All layers including an In-Ga-Zn-O active channel are prepared by atomic-layer deposition except for source and drain electrodes. Both inorganic and organic materials, SiO2 and polyimide (PI), are introduced as spacer materials and dry etch processes are used to form vertical sidewalls. Nearly vertical...
The ever-increasing need for higher number of neural recording channels along with the stringent power and area requirements of a brain-implantable device, demand for ultra-compact and scalable channel architectures. In this paper, we will first briefly discuss the fundamental scaling issues of conventional AC- and DC-coupled neural front-ends. Next, we will analytically examine the feasibility of...
This paper describes a direct coupled neural amplifier with active electrode offset suppression in order to avoid large coupling capacitors and complex chopper circuits. It describes a novel feedback scheme, where a low pass current mode feedback is applied to a regulated telescopic cascode amplifer, at the cascode nodes by using a modified transconductance block. This solution leads to fully differential...
This paper presents a novel architecture for a kilo-ohm to giga-ohm pseudo-resistor (PR), based on transistors operating in subthreshold with a fixed-Vgs configuration. This PR when used in an RC filter has a very low and constant settling time regardless of the programmed pole frequency. The proposed PR takes advantage of bootstrapping to improve its tuning range. By defining a constant VGs for the...
Even though the discovery of ferroelectricity in HfO2 enabled further scaling of ferroelectric (FE) memories, these memories suffer from limited endurance. Recently, we showed how the non-volatility can be induced within the state-of-the-art DRAM capacitor stacks. By using an asymmetric stack, comprising electrodes with different workfunction values an internal bias field can be used to make anti-ferroelectric...
This paper presents the design methodology of a miniaturized, portable, and low power electrostatic precipitator (ESP) to reduce indoor air pollution (IAP) from rural cookstoves. Decreasing the concentration of aerosol particles helps reduce the incidence of respiratory tract infections that can lead to disease and even death. We trace existing technologies and standards to combat IAP in cookstoves,...
Wireless power transfer (WPT) is studied for battery charging in the IoT world. WPT via electric coupling is studied for apparatuses in water using the effect of large dielectric constant of water. One electrode is isolated from water and another electrode is exposed in water for underwater WPT. The power transfer efficiency is over 75%.
